Margot Robbie's role in Wolf of Wall Street made her into a household name. Before that, with her only notable role coming in Neighbours, her name would have simply passed you by.

She's gone from appearing in an average soap to being one of Hollywood's most famous stars, going on to leading roles in Focus, The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad.

But to get that initial big screen role as Naomi Lapaglia it wasn't simply a case of having an audition and that's that, she had to do something outside the box to Leonardo DiCaprio to secure her place in the production.

According to director Martin Scorsese, to impress him the Aussie actress went completely off script, to the point where she borderline assaulted Leo.

"She clinched her part in The Wolf of Wall Street during our first meeting - by hauling off and giving Leonardo DiCaprio a thunderclap of a slap on the face," Scorsese wrote in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People issue.

"[It was] an improvisation that stunned us all."

Margot herself has spoken about her tactics, saying that she knew that all she had was a small period of time to impress one of the most well-known directors and actors in the world, so the big guns had to be pulled out.

"In my head I was like, 'You have literally 30 seconds left in this room and if you don't do something impressive nothing will ever come of it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it'. And so I start screaming at him and he's yelling back at me.

"And he's really scary. I can barely keep up," she told Harper's Bazaar back in 2015.

"And he ends it saying, 'You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now get over here and kiss me'.

"So I walk up really close to his face and then I'm like, 'Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?'.

"But another part of my brain clicks and I just go, whack! I hit him in the face. And then I scream, 'F**k you!'. And that's not in the script at all. The room just went dead silent and I froze."

She apparently got scared as to what would happen next, but as it turns out Leo told her to hit him again.
