A Modern Family star has slammed the trolls who say he's too old for his fiancée.

Eric Stonestreet this week announced that he was engaged to his partner, Lindsay Schweitzer, who he has been dating for several years.

Sharing a snap of them together just after he popped the question, the actor wrote on Instagram: "She said, 'She'd have her people call my people.'"

However, some of the haters online were - unsurprisingly - not very kind, claiming the 49-year-old was 'too old' for his girlfriend, who is 42.

So he decided to have a little fun with his followers, using the age filter to 'fix' the photo of them both.

Posting the hilarious pic, Stonestreet wrote: "Apparently a lot of people think I look too old, as a 49-year-old man, to be engaged to my almost 42-year-old fiancée.

"Look, she can't help that she looks so great at 42 and I can't help that I apparently look like her grandad so, I fixed it for everyone."

Following the couple's announcement, fans and friends piled into the comments to share their best wishes and congratulations.

Stonestreet's co-star and on-screen partner Jesse Tyler Ferguson joked: "I assume these are the same people who love Jay & Gloria's relationship...Which is where YOU got the idea of having a younger spouse, right?"

Another user said: "So awesome. I'll be there to get the bride ready. And the groom."

A third quipped: "Congrats! That ring is as big as Bill Snyder Family Stadium."

While another added: "You look great without any filters! Congratulations."

The couple first met at the Big Slick charity event in Stonestreet's hometown of Kansas City back in 2016.

Speaking to People, a close friend to them said at the time: "They are very happy to have met each other.

"They're enjoying spending time together."

In 2017, Stonestreet told Ellen DeGeneres: "She calms me - she calms my nerves. I'm a very high-strung person."
