Warning: Spoilers Ahead

The BBC drama The Secrets She Keeps has stunned viewers who were unaware of the dark, true story behind it.

The series follows two women, Agatha and Meghan, who are both pregnant at the same time and are due on the same date. But all is not as it seems.

It eventually turns out that Agatha is faking her pregnancy as part of her scheme to kidnap Meghan's son, Ben.

But while some viewers were aware of the real-life events that had inspired the series, many weren't.

Writing on Twitter, one person wrote: "Catching up with the secrets she keeps on iPlayer... hard to watch and then I find out it's a true story!!"

Another commented: "Just finished watching The Secrets She Keeps absolutely fantastic."

The true story is based on the kidnapping of Abbie Humphries, who was snatched when she was just a few hours old by Julie Kelley almost 26 years ago.

Abbie was eventually found alive just 17 days after she was taken.

Julie's neighbours had become suspicious when the 22-year-old returned home from hospital with a baby girl, as she had told them she was expecting a boy.

When the news broke that a newborn had been kidnapped, some started to fear that Julie may have been responsible.

Following the shocking revelation, Julie was arrested but avoided a jail sentence.

Earlier this year, Abbie, now 25, revealed how she sat down to watch TV at her home in New Zealand and was stunned when the series appeared and she realised it was about her.

She told the Mail on Sunday: "As I am sure you can imagine, this does bring up a lot of emotions for my family."

Abbie's parents decided to emigrate from the UK when she was 10 years old, buying a rural estate in New Zealand.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post in 2017, Abbie said: "My parents told me all about it as I grew up, but not all in one go. It came out in bits and pieces. It was after we moved to New Zealand when I realised how big it all was.

"We were unpacking all the boxes and I saw the press cuttings that's when I realised what a huge deal it was.

"But it didn't stir up any emotions of horror or anything - to be honest, I thought it was rather cool.

"I learned how hard the police worked looking for me - perhaps that's why I've been thinking about joining up - maybe I'll end up as a detective."

Abbie is now married.

Speaking previously about the kidnapping, her mother Karen had said that even after losing her child so quickly, she knew she had to stay strong.

She said: "I'd had those first three hours with Abbie, cuddling her and feeding her. The bonding had begun.

"It was a terrible wrench to lose her so quickly, but I knew I had to be strong and believe that I would get her back."

The Secrets She Keeps is available to watch on iPlayer now.
