People Shocked To Find Out Stephen Graham's Wife Is In Time

The actor auditioned with his partner before she got the part in the mini-series

The BBC's gritty drama Time has shocked fans with its grim portrayal of the harsh reality of prison life.

But while viewers have been left reeling at the show's brutality, many others were equally surprised to discover that Stephen Graham's on-screen wife is also his partner in real life.

Hannah Walters, who has been married to the This is England star for over a decade, plays Sonia McNally, the wife of prison officer Eric in the drama.

And it's really blown people's minds.

Taking to social media, one fan said: "Wtf Stephen Graham's wife in Time is his wife in real life."

Echoing the surprise, another chimed in: "When you remark that the woman playing Stephen Graham's wife looks like his real life wife, then realise it is her."

A third commented: "Started watching this. Stephen Graham's wife (in the show) is his actual wife (in real life)."

While another added: "Thought I recognised the actress playing Stephen Graham's wife in Time tonight and it turns out I did. It's Stephen Graham's wife."

During a recent interview with Radio X's Chris Moyles, the couple explained how they came to be cast in the same show.

Graham said: "This time, fortunately, I was involved in the respect of - I was an executive producer. I'm sitting at the grown up's table, you know what I mean?

"I was able to make some suggestions along with casting and things like that and [director Lewis Arnold] was fantastic and really accommodating and that's where I threw a few names in the hat - the likes of Bobby Schofield, James [Nelson] Joyce."

With Moyles asking: "Hannah Walters?"

Graham replied: "Yeah and that's how it kind of happened. I said, 'You know, maybe-' and he was, like, 'Yeah of course, definitely that sounds great', and Hannah was reluctant at first."

Walters then jumped in, saying: "I really told him off, really told him off. 'What are you doing! Why've you put my name in there? You shouldn't have done that - that's naughty!' And then I was really grateful."

Graham went on: "And then she put herself on tape and obviously with all the other actresses that had put themselves on tape, he picked her because she was the best for the role."

The couple have been married for over a decade.

With Walters adding: "Because fortunately we had quite good chemistry. It would have been shocking if he'd gone, 'I'm sorry, it's just not working between you'."

For those of you who don't know, Time is a new three-part series written by Jimmy McGovern, which follows a newly-imprisoned man (Sean Bean) and a prison officer (Graham), who are both pushed to their limits.

A synopsis from the BBC reads: "Mark Cobden (Bean) is newly imprisoned, consumed by guilt for his crime, and way out of his depth in the volatile world of prison life.

"He meets Eric McNally (Graham), an excellent prison officer doing his best to protect those in his charge.

"However, when one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice; between his principles and his family.

"Sean Bean and Stephen Graham star as two men on the edge in this emotional and thrilling portrayal of life in a British prison. What does it take to survive?"
