Ryan Gosling is set to star in a Wolfman reboot, it has been reported.

The 39-year-old actor and several others reportedly pitched their ideas to Universal, with studio execs won over by the Canadian's vision.

According to Variety, sources have revealed that Gosling's idea takes inspiration from the 2014 thriller Nightcrawler, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a sinister cameraman out to make a name for himself.

And while a director hasn't attached themselves to the project as yet, it's understood that several names are in the running, with Cory Finley (Bad Education) hotly-tipped.

It's also understood that Universal had originally planned on creating an interconnected world of monsters but reassessed their plans and decided to look for more original concepts - eventually landing on Gosling's proposal.

As part of the studio's concept, other producers and directors, including Paul Feig and John Krasinski, pitched ideas for characters they would like to bring to the big screen.

The hope is that any future film release will achieve similar success to that of The Invisible Man, which hit cinemas earlier this year, raking in $122 million at the box office before theatres closed due to lockdown.

No release date has been confirmed.

This comes a few weeks after rumours started circulating that Disney was working on developing a live-action adaptation of the 1997 classic, Hercules.

With Gosling also said to be in the running for the reboot, it was reported that Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo will produce the film (but not direct) via their production company, AGBO.

The 39-year-old has also been touted to star in the Hercules reboot.

The original film, which was released 23 years ago, follows the young Hercules (Tate Donovan) - Zeus' son - who was snatched by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as half-man, half-God.

Retaining super-human strength, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living on Mount Olympus with the help of a Danny Devito-voiced satyr he learns what really makes a hero.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new Hercules is in early development, and this being a Disney title, rumors have already swirled about other producers and even filmmakers. The Russos are the only producers on the project and will not direct, according to insiders.

In recent weeks, casting rumours have also been knocking around which were spurred by Ariana Grande's performance of 'I Won't Say I'm in Love' - a song from the film.

Fans called upon her to take on the role of Megara, the female lead, and there was even a Change.org petition set up. Idris Elba's name has also been floated around.
