Driving tests are pretty nerve-wracking all round - the relief you feel when you're told you've passed is second to none.

But imagine your licence being taken off you... before you've even got it.

Well, that could be the reality for 12,000 unlucky new drivers who are at risk of having their licences revoked immediately after their test.

A Freedom of Information request to find out how many drivers have penalty points (or endorsements) on their provisional licence showed that a huge 65,054 people have accrued points without having taken their test - never mind passing the damn thing.

DVLA data shows that a staggering 10,639 learner drivers have seven to nine points on their provisional licence, while 1,803 have 10 or more - which makes 12,442 in total.

This means that more than 12,000 learner drivers could have their licence cancelled immediately after passing their test.

Points from your provisional are carried over to your full licence, and if you get six or more points within two years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked.

According to statistics compiled by Moneyshake, an astonishing 52,802 men already have points on their provisional licence, compared to just 12,252 women.

Findings also show that 20-year-old males are likely to be the most dangerous drivers.

When broken down by age group, learners in their 20s are the worst for having penalty points before passing their test.

The DVLA data shows that a huge 26,552 provisional licence holders in their 20s already have one or more endorsements on their driving record.

When it comes to the top motoring offences committed by drivers aged 16-25 between 2019 and 2020, it was revealed that 81,509 were committed by drivers in that age group - with £40.7 million being handed out in fines.

There are nine young drivers caught driving illegally every hour in the UK for offences such as speeding on a public road (47,863), speeding on a motorway (11,363), driving without insurance (6,367), failure to identify a driver (1,955) and failure to comply with traffic light signals (1,649).

Terrifying stuff.

Can we just all be careful now, please?
