99-Year-Old Woman Thought To Be Oldest Person To Recover From Coronavirus

Rita Reynolds' family credit her continued longevity to eating plenty of marmalade sandwiches

A 99-year-old woman has become the oldest person in the UK to survive the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic after beating the disease.

What's more, great grandmother Rita Reynolds reckons she's found the secret to defeating the infection - eating marmalade sandwiches.

Obviously, that's not scientifically tested, but a marmalade sandwich - or a jam butty, for that matter - couldn't do any harm, right?

After all of the bad news we've been stuck with recently, we've finally got something to celebrate.

So, Rita took ill last week, and after she tested positive for the virus her family were expecting the worst, but - against all odds - she rallied.

The staff at her care home, Abbeyfield in Stockport, even bought in end of life drugs, but they were not necessary. Rita rallied, and is now thought to be the UK's oldest person to get better after testing positive for the disease.

After a few days, the district nurses reported that she had recovered from her illness and was now well on her way back to something approximating normal health.

Her grandson, Henry Phillips, said that his grandma's recovery is down to her longstanding love of "marmalade sandwiches and biscuits".

Not a bad diet, really. Hey, if you've lived to 99 years of age you deserve to eat whatever the hell you want.

Now, Rita is looking forward to celebrating reaching her 100th birthday in July.

Henry, a 37-year-old accountant, said: "I was certain that was it for her.

"When you hear everything you hear about coronavirus, and a 99-year-old gets it - she's 99 so obviously she's frail - I didn't think there was any way she would recover from it.

"But she seems to have done it."

Yup, if Rita survived The Blitz by hiding under her kitchen table and reading a book, she's unlikely to have been too fazed by this whole scenario.

Let's hope we can all be so lucky.

In Italy, one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic, a 95-year-old woman also managed to fight back the virus. Alma Clara Corsini, from near Modena, went into hospital on March 5, but has now made a full recovery.

Speaking to Italian local newspaper Gazetta Di Modena, she said: "Yes, yes, I'm fine. They were good people who looked after me well, and now they'll send me home in a little while."

There we go, we could use a few older examples to look up to just now.
