A New Banksy Has Appeared On The Wall At Southampton General Hospital

The piece pays tribute to the NHS staff

A new painting by mysterious street artist Banksy has appeared at Southampton General Hospital.

The painting, which is slightly different to a lot of other Banksy works, has been hung - in full collaboration with the managers of the hospital - in a foyer not far from the emergency department.

The painting, which is totally in black and white barring a single red cross, measures one square metre and shows a young boy kneeling next to a waste bin wearing dungarees and a t-shirt.

In his hand, he's clutching an 'action hero' version of an NHS nurse whilst his previous favourites, Spider-Man and Batman figurines, lie discarded in the wastepaper basket.

The nurse's arm is pointed out in the classic style of Superman in full flight.

The aforementioned red cross is the only splash of colour on her apron, and she's wearing a face mask as part of her uniform.

It's a pretty obvious message, but one that we can all get behind.

With the notice, the reclusive artist left a note for the people who are working around the clock in the hospital.

That note reads: "Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white."

The idea is that the painting will sit there until the autumn, at which point it will be taken down and auctioned off to raise money for NHS charities.

Paula Head, who is the CEO of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends.

"The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour."

The painting is sitting in full view for the people who are patients on Level C of Southampton General Hospital, as well as - perhaps more importantly - for the staff working there to go and have a look.

Head added: "It will be really valued by everyone in the hospital, as people get a moment in their busy lives to pause, reflect and appreciate this piece of art. It will no doubt also be a massive boost to morale for everyone who works and is cared for at our hospital."

It's a bit different to Banksy's other work, in a sense that it's been painted with permission, and not straight onto a wall, but we can all agree that it's a nice thing for the artist to have done.
