A man was arrested outside a supermarket yesterday afternoon (26 April) after 'behaving aggressively' and allegedly attempting to jump the queue.

Police were called to a Tesco store in Middleton, Greater Manchester, following reports of a man being aggressive towards customers and staff.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of theft, which was in relation to an earlier incident at a nearby Co-op store.

The man was also 'further arrested' in custody for possession of Class A and Class B drugs.

Witnesses at the supermarket on Barton Road said the man's behaviour left people terrified, as he screamed at staff and shoppers.

As customers observed social distancing rules by lining up outside the shop, the man also allegedly attempted to skip the queue.

Robert Comnoiu 23, had been with girlfriend Deena Potter, 30, outside the store when the incident happened.

He said: "We had just finished our weekly shop. Then we heard screaming.

"This man came running from the store and knocked my girlfriend over as he pushed her trying to run away.

"A security guard tried to get hold him, but he was getting away. A second guard then came and they got him on the ground.

"They let him stand up, but then he started being aggressive again and they kept him on the ground until the police came.

"My girlfriend was shocked, but not hurt. I think he had tried to get into the shop without queueing like everyone else."

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly before 1.25pm today (Sunday, April 26), police were called to reports of a man behaving aggressively towards customers and staff at Tesco on Barton Road, Middleton.

"Officers attended and a 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with an earlier incident at the Co-op on Middleton Road.

"Once in custody, the man was further arrested for possession of Class A and Class B drugs. He has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"There are no reported injuries."

Earlier this month, a 'hut hub' coronavirus assessment centre was set up in the car park of the Middleton Tesco store.

It was opened as a facility for members of the public who had been referred by the NHS 111 helpline number.
