There are certain moments in this world that restore your faith in humanity and this is one of them - an autistic boy who finds it difficult to make friends was sent 3,000 birthday cards from around the world after going viral.

Due to not being able to speak, little Alfie Thompson can only communicate through sign language so struggles to speak with other children.

He is one of only eight people, in the entire world, who suffer from a rare chromosome deletion.

Bronya said that due to Alfie's health battles and his struggles to speak he has just a handful of friends and there are only six other children in his class at school.

Because of this, when his birthday comes around, though he doesn't get many, he loves opening the cards. So this year, his mum, Bronya, sent out an appeal online asking for people to send Alfie some cards for his eighth birthday.

Bronya couldn't quite believe the response she got when several bags - filled with cards from all over the world - arrived at their home.

She said: "Thank you ever so much to everyone who sent Alfie cards and presents, we are all totally overwhelmed with the response. You've had me in tears, Alfie has had cards from Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Zimbabwe, all around the UK - it's been incredible.

"Alfie will have an amazing birthday with his friends and family and I really can't thank you enough. If you ever see us around, please say hello. Please remember - not every disability is visible and be kind."

Along with all the cards from supportive individuals, local businesses got on board too - a cake maker, called Millie's Cakes, made Alfie his very own superhero birthday cake and over at Heathrow Airport, in London, they put him together a goody bag.

Plymouth Live organised the appeal and brought all the wonderful gifts to Alfie.

Bronya praised everyone who was involved in making Alfie's birthday special.

She said: "Big shout out to Plymouth Live for making this happen, Queen B salon and Moo Music for helping collect cards.

"Millie's cakes, Amy Briffa, for donating Alfie his birthday cake! We totally loved it!"

This emotional moment could surely melt the iciest of hearts out there.
