Bailiff Counts £423 Debt Out In Change After Man Pays Almost Entirely In £1 Coins

Although the bailiff originally refused to accept the coins, the man eventually got his way

Alongside parking inspectors and lawyers, bailiffs are among some of the least popular careers known to man.

So, when one bloke - known only as Lee - was asked to pay up the £423 ($519) he owed, he took the opportunity to make it as slow and as painful a process as humanly possible.

Rather than pay on card or give the debt enforcement officer the money in £20s and £50s, he handed him a plastic bag full of £1 coins.

Surprisingly, this didn't go down too well with the bailiff. Fortunately for us, he captured the entire painstaking process on camera, and the footage was shared in Facebook group 'Birmz is Grime'.

After refusing to take the money, the perturbed bailiff decided to give his boss a call to see what he should do.

Lee didn't make it easy for the bailiff to collect the debt.

While on the phone, he can be heard asking: "What's the most I can take in change? There's a lunatic that's telling me I've got £423 in change."

He then tries to hand the back of cash back to Lee, telling him: "Coinage Act 1972 restricts me to anything more than £5 in change. Don't have to take it."

But unwilling to take no for an answer, Lee insists the bailiff takes his money - made up of £25 ($30) in notes and the rest in coins.

Beaten, the officer sighs: "Unbelievable."

Victorious, Lee then adds: "I know you people like to go around and bully people."

The video goes on to show the bailiff counting out the money and putting it all into plastic bags to be taken to the bank.

The bailiff was forced to count the money out in change.

The clip has been viewed more than 68,000 times since it was uploaded. And there were plenty of people who felt the bailiff was 'just doing his job' and that Lee should have paid his debt sooner.

One person wrote: "As much as we hate debt collectors, law enforcement officers, at the end of the day they [sic] doing a job and earning a living wage to pay bills. To be fair, as funny as it is, the bailiff was very calm and polite."

A second user said: "Pay your bills and you won't have any hassle. Never any context to these videos, what was the original bill for?"

A third commented: "Just like to say. The bailiff didn't create the debt. Its money for a debt you owed to someone else and didn't have the decency to pay what was due.

"Trying to humiliate him by giving him the debt in change says a lot more about you than it does about him. Well done. I really hope that having to part with it, coins or not, has taught you a lesson."
