A bar in Manchester has been told that its 'f***ing massive pizza slices' do, in fact, constitute a substantial meal.

Common, in the Northern Quarter area of the city centre, had been ordered by police to stop selling 11-inch slices following the introduction of the new Tier Three lockdown measures in the region.

However, a spokesperson for the bar said the local authorities had since contacted them to say that its huge slices do meet the new guidelines.

A post to Common's Instagram account said: "The head of Greater Manchester Police Licensing got on the blower to let us know that Slice Gate has been revisited and our @nellspizza slices (cut from 22 inch pizzas) are now officially deemed substantial.

"Back on the menu today (25 October) from 12pm with limited supply. This means you can have a slice with a beer then toddle off. Full 14" and 22" pizzas are available as standard."

It comes a day after the restaurant announced that it would no longer be able to sell pizza by the slice after police officers visited the Edge Street eatery and ordered staff to stop serving them.

However, a spokesperson for Common said the officers couldn't tell them how many slices would be counted as substantial.

They said: "SLICES ARE CANCELLED. The po-po came and shut down our by-the-slice game yday so now it's FULL 14" and 22" pizzas only. Slices cut from 22 inch pizzas don't fit the substantial food brief but they couldn't tell us what substantial food was.

"It's almost as if the brief is just a slogan...and nobody on the frontline has been given any substantial info beyond that. This government leading with baseless sloganeering? UNPRECEDENTED TIMES!"

In a subsequent post, they shared a photograph of one of the 11-ich slices, with the caption: "It's f***ing massive."

Greater Manchester was forced into Tier Three lockdown measures after a breakdown in negotiations between the UK government and local leaders in the region.

It meant that from 23 October pubs and bars had to close, unless serving substantial meals, and people were strongly advised against travel into or out of the area.

Different households have also been banned from mixing indoors and outdoors, including in private gardens. The rule of six also applies to public spaces, such as parks.

As with other areas in Tier Three restrictions, the measures will last a minimum of 28 days, with the situation to be reviewed at that time.

Fierce talks between Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and government representatives broke down, with parties unable to agree over a £5m difference in financial support.

In a press conference in Manchester City Centre earlier today (20 October), Andy Burnham confirmed that no deal was reached between Greater Manchester leaders and the Government, accusing Downing Street of 'walking away' from talks.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the collapse in talks were a 'sign of Government failure'.

He tweeted: "Labour recognises the need for stricter public health restrictions.

"However, that must be accompanied by extra financial support."
