Battle Of Hastings 50p Coin Fetches More Than £63,000 On eBay

That's 126,000 more than the face value

A rare 50p coin featuring a design inspired by the Battle of Hastings has sold for more than £63,000 on eBay.

This particular piece was created back in 2016 in order to mark the 950th anniversary of the battle between King Harold II and William the Conqueror.

In fact, it features a picture of King Harold getting stuck through the eye with an arrow, or at least a figure some have identified as the English king, from the Bayeux Tapestry.

Weirdly enough, this 50p isn't exactly one of a kind. As it happens, 6.7 million of them entered circulation in 2016. Perhaps there's one lurking in your pocket?

Anyway, if you can grab one, or find one sitting in the back of the washing machine, this one has now fetched 126,000 times the price that it says on the coin.

This is a baffling fact for the coin experts out there, who don't even regard this edition of the 50p piece as particularly rare or interesting.

This coin was created by designer John Bergdahl in 2016 to mark the big anniversary of the battle, which is great, but it's not as rare as the Kew Gardens 50p coin.

That's the rarest one in circulation, as it happens. There are only thought to be around 210,000 of those left kicking about.

In this particular sale, the 50p piece was put online for sale at £1,500, but after only 10 days it had risen to £61,000.

By the time it ended, it had received 41 bids.

There's no guarantee that anything you stick on there will sell for that amount, either. Strangely enough, some other Battle of Hastings 50p coins are only going for about £2.

ChangeChecker expert Alexandra Siddons told Mirror Money: "Values for coins tend to vary every now and then and it could be that demand for 50ps has gone up because we're seeing less change used right now because of coronavirus.

"The ones with historical anniversaries tend to do better amongst collectors - and this one sparked a clear pricing war.

"That said, there are other Battle of Hastings 50p coins on eBay selling for £2, so do your research.

"We often have random coins that we don't expect to take off that much that sometimes they just skyrocket. That could be the explanation here.

"What we do know is that this isn't the most sought after 50p in circulation. These are the Kew Gardens or Jemima Puddle-Duck editions.

"If you have one and are looking to list it, contrary to this listing, uncirculated coins tend to sell better statistically."
