Boris Johnson has announced he and his partner Carrie Symonds are expecting a baby together, and they are also now engaged to be married.

A spokesperson for the UK's Prime Minister and Symonds said: "The prime minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer."

Symonds, 31, a former Conservative Party head of communications, also shared the news in a post on her personal Instagram account, writing: "I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me...

"We got engaged at the end of last year... and we've got a baby hatching early summer.

"Feeling incredibly blessed."

Their child will be the first child born to a sitting PM since David and Samantha Cameron's daughter Florence Rose Endellion was welcomed into the world in August 2010. Tony Blair and his wife Cherie also had a child, a boy called Leo, while he was in office.

This will be the first child Symonds and Johnson have had together.

The couple's wedding will be the first time a British Prime Minister has married in office for 250 years.

Symonds is the first unmarried partner of an incumbent Prime Minister, and the first to move into Downing Street as well.

While this will be Symonds' first child, Boris Johnson already has at least five children with his various partners over the years.

He has four grown-up children with his ex wife Marina Wheeler, and has a child from another relationship with Helen Macintyre.

How many children the Conservative leader has is an ongoing debate, and one Johnson refused to answer questions on during last December's general election.

During an interview with LBC last year, he said: "I love my children very much but they are not standing at this election. I'm therefore not going to comment on them."

Symonds, who quit her job as the Tory head of comms in 2019 to work in PR for the conservation organisation Oceana.

The pair also have a dog called Dilyn.

Johnson and Symonds' relationship came under scrutiny late last year when the Metropolitan Police were called to their house after reports of a disturbance.

They later released a statement saying that the caller was 'was concerned for the welfare of a female neighbour' but, after attending the call, officers found both to be 'safe and well'.
