A primary school teacher is still living behind bars in Kuwait despite being cleared of a drugs charge.

Sara Assayed, 35, was sentenced for 10 years back in March 2021 after local police claimed drugs were found in her car.

The trial which lasted a grand total of 30 minutes was dubbed a 'sham' and Sara - who has lived in Kuwait City since she was 17 - was cleared following an appeal last month, but is still in prison.

Her family, from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, are pleading with the UK Government to get Sara out of jail and back to her hometown in Wales.

According to the Mirror, in March 2019 Sara was on her way home with a colleague after running an evening class for disabled children when she was stopped by police.

She was arrested on a drug-related offence, her car was confiscated and her friend had to get a taxi home.

Sara was remanded in custody for four months, but then was released on bail. She had to stay in Kuwait and wait for the trial to take place after her passport was seized.

Now, Sara's sister Sheree has revealed how the family are becoming more and more concerned for her wellbeing. She told Wales Online: "Her mental health is in a state.

"We hired a lawyer who got her out on bail because there was not enough significant evidence to keep her. They let her out on bail until her trial, so she was at home in Kuwait.

Sara's parents are fighting to get her released.

"She wasn't able to come home to the UK because in Kuwait you're not allowed to travel if there's a case against you."

Sara's dad Ziad, who is an engineer, flew to the Middle East in a bid to secure a meeting with the ambassador - after phone calls failed to have any impact - but he was turned down.

Following Sara's trial, the family hired a lawyer in Kuwait to get the sentence overturned and in an hour they were able to provide enough evidence to do so.

Now they are trying to arrange for her to travel home and organise for Covid tests to be carried out, but are becoming frustrated with what they say is a lack of support from the British Embassy.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are assisting a British national who is detained in Kuwait and are in touch with their family and the local authorities."

A petition has now been launched to get Sara back to Wales - you can find out more and sign it here.
