A chef who won a million quid on a scratch card still turned up for his Christmas Day and Boxing Day shifts so as not to let his customers down. How nice is that?

Didzis Pirags, a chef and kitchen manager at The Hungry House in Broughton, won the jackpot while on his lunch-break last weekend, but was determined not to disappoint those who were going to the pub over the festive period.

Single dad Didzis said he decided to buy himself a £5 online scratch card on Saturday after he got 'a lucky itch' and his 'itch' turned out to be spot on as he scooped the jackpot.

Describing his win, he said: "I literally ran downstairs and said to my boss, 'look, look it's £1 million isn't it, isn't it?'

"She said, 'yeah, it is £1 million' and I rang the number and they confirmed it."

The delighted dad said he's been able to put a deposit down on his first ever home and says the prize will be life changing for him and his five-year-old son.

Didzis said: "This is totally unbelievable what has happened, and the best dream come true ever at Christmas time.

"I will be able to give my son the best ever life now which is all I have ever wished for.

"I am currently living above my place of work and now I can look forward to owning a home of my own and a very special place to bring my son up.

"I have put a deposit down on a four-bedroom house with a garden which I know my son will love!"

Hard-working Didzis says he currently works 60 hours a week as well as caring for his son, so will use his winnings to allow him to leave his job and look for a new one that will give him weekends off to spend time with his little boy.

He added: "All I want is to be able to provide the best possible life for my son and this win will enable me to do exactly this."

As well as helping to buy his first home, Didzis says he will give away some of his winnings to friends and family and that he will give away his current car and buy himself a brand-new one.
