Professor Chris Whitty managed to keep his cool while a TikTok user taunted him in the street, repeatedly calling the Chief Medical Officer a 'liar'.

In a clip posted to TikTok, Whitty can be seen walking along the road at Westminster's Strutton Ground market.

Reaching into his pocket, Whitty pulls out his face mask and pops it on, before stopping to wait near an outdoor food stall.

The person filming follows him along the street, before pausing as Whitty stops - continually harassing him throughout the encounter.

A voice behind the camera can be heard calling Whitty a 'liar', saying he's 'lying about the Covid-19 cases' and to 'stop lying to the TV, man'.

Amazingly, Whitty doesn't crack once, and simply stands waiting with his mask on.

However, after the footage began to circulate online, many others have jumped to his defence.

Matt Vickers, Conservative MP for Stockton South, tweeted: "This is appalling, I really can't believe this footage.

"Chris Whitty is doing all he can to help guide us through this crisis and should never be subjected to this."

In a statement to the Guardian, Vickers said: "The chief medical officer is working day in and day out to help guide our nation through this unprecedented crisis and I think all of us, no matter your political affiliation can agree the man is doing his absolute best."

He said people should remember that Whitty was still working on the frontline, suggesting the 'young man' filming should volunteer in a Covid ward.

Vickers continued: "As the clouds of this pandemic continue to part, I think those like Prof Chris Whitty will be seen as heroes who stepped up, did their job and led us through the darkest of hours.

"As for the young man in the video, the less said the better. Perhaps he should be made to volunteer on a Covid ward.

"Perhaps then he will feel a pinch of shame and embarrassment for his dangerous conspiracies and yobbish behaviour."

According to The Sun, many furious TikTok users also slammed the anonymous cameraman, with one saying: "He's literally accomplished more than you ever will in your lifetime, show some respect."

Another commented: "The man is a doctor and a scientist that devoted his life to service. Just leave him alone."

The original video and the TikTok account that posted it now appear to have been deleted.
