Couple Refuse To Return Home Two Years After Hearing ‘Screaming’ In Basement

A couple in west Wales who fled their home two years ago after hearing 'screaming' in their basement still feel unable to return, but are still desperate to find out what's going on.

The strange happenings began back in June 2018, when Alan and Christine Tait heard weird noises while up late one evening in their house, which is located off a main road in Ammanford, Camarthenshire - down an alleyway, hidden from the main hustle and bustle.

Christine said at first they could hear a 'flushing noise', which then turned into the sound of a 'machine running'.

It was then that they started recording the noises all over the house, picking up the sounds of 'chains, a motorbike starting, and people screaming'.

The homeowners believe the strange and mysterious noises are coming from under the basement.

Over time they heard the disturbing noises of screaming, crying and swearing, along with the voices of men, women and children - all supposedly coming from underneath the house.

Alan even dug 1.5 metre channels into the walls of the basement and furnished them with recording equipment, hearing 'a woman screaming, sexual sounds, dogs barking, a printing press running, a motorbike, a car horn honking and what sounds like a police siren'.

He has since posted the recordings online for others to hear for themselves.

Eventually they fled their property, and now live in the north of England in a mobile home, travelling around and trying to raise awareness of what they believe is happening beneath their house - convinced that a criminal gang have been running a subterranean enterprise underneath their kitchen.

Alan told Wales Online: "We have a number of supporters who have been in touch with us, and one has been to the house several times and made hours and hours of recordings which also picked up similar noises.

"The main difference is that the machine noises are quieter, but you can still hear the voices, you can still hear the screaming.

"Those recordings were made on July 3 last year and again on December 21. It has to be the case [that there are people underneath the house] if I picked up the noises in 2018 and someone else, totally independently, picked up similar noises a year later and 18 months later."

Alan doesn't believe the mysterious happenings have a paranormal origin, and instead thinks it's an issue much closer to home.

"Speaking about it with others helps to get the message out, and a lot of people are certainly curious about it," he said.

"But what we want is for people to be serious about it - and for the right people to investigate it properly."

Last year the Taits also set up an online petition 'in desperation', arguing the matter still requires 'urgent and full investigation'.

"We've sent details to the police and to Crimewatch but it never goes anywhere," Alan said.

"We have two concerns: why isn't it being investigated properly? And our main concern is the screaming. If there are people down there they are obviously really struggling.

"There has to be a reason for the noises."

Dyfed-Powys Police sent officers to the property in November 2018, but did not go inside. Alan says they have also listened to one of the recordings captured at the home and 'dismissed it'.

He added: "They said that they were 'ordinary noises' that could have come from around the house. They also said that we could have recorded them off the TV - why would we do that, and then leave our home? Anybody could just record noises from the TV."

According to Wales Online, the police are satisfied that nothing of interest lies within, or under, the seemingly unremarkable house in a seemingly unremarkable town.

However, the Taits remain unconvinced, and continue to try and get to the bottom of it.
