A couple had their romantic anniversary meal hilariously interrupted when a boat full of nudists whizzed past them.

John Wood and his wife were enjoying a 'lovely' dinner at the River Exe Café, a 'floating gastro shed' on the Exe Estuary in Devon, which boasts 'dining with a difference'.

But they got more than they bargained for when a nudist cruise rocked up on the river as they tucked into their meal - they looked up to see a large group of naked strangers waving at them from the deck.

The passing cruise was an event run by the Torbay Sun Club's annual Nude Cruise, which kicked off at 7pm on Friday 23 July after setting sail from Exmouth Docks.

John said the general reaction in the restaurant was thankfully a positive one, as others saw the funny side.

He told Devon Live: "My wife and I were having a lovely anniversary dinner at the River Exe café when we caught sight of a boat full of naked people travelling slowly.

"Reaction in the restaurant was mostly of amusement, and concern for their health as the wind was getting up. Luckily that was the only thing that was!"

The Torbay Sun Club is a 'naturist swim and social club that meets once a week', and plans regular events throughout the year - including, of course, the yearly summer cruise.

Its founding members formed the club back in 1976, and has since become one of the biggest naturist swim and sauna clubs in the UK, according to its website.

Explaining why its members enjoy naturism, the site club says: "Often, it's for freedom and the shedding of the pressures of life.

"For many of us, naturism happens only at home; nudity helps us to unwind - that may sound bizarre but just try it.

"Taking off clothes has a way of removing social barriers too."

It adds that 'absolutely anyone who wants to be' can be a naturist, saying: "Naturism is a great leveller and, without their clothes on it's very difficult indeed to work out what people do for a job or a hobby!

"You would be surprised how many people you pass by in the street, or in the supermarket, are naturists.

"Naturists come in all ages, shapes and sizes."
