Driving lessons are expected to resume in England from 4 July, according to an announcement from Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The House of Commons leader told MPs that proposals are being set out to assist driving instructors in returning to a life which is 'as close to normal as possible'.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency will be writing to instructors, outlining the plans to restart lessons and tests.

In addition to the announcement, Mr Rees-Mogg added that there will be a 'phased approach to resuming practical testing'.

Speaking at Business Questions in the Commons, he said: "From 4 July I am happy to say that people will be able to take driving lessons on a motorcycle, or in a car, lorry or bus and there will be a phased approach to resuming practical testing so learners have the opportunity to practice before taking a test."

According to AA Driving School, instructors are being advised to 'thoroughly' clean their vehicles before and after each lesson, 'paying particular attention to areas of the car that are touch points, such as door handles'.

The BBC outlined some more rules which include:

  • Wearing clothes that cover arms and legs
  • Wearing face coverings and disposable gloves (to be changed after every lesson)
  • Keeping windows down throughout the lesson

The AA considered using plastic screens between the instructor and learner but decided it is 'imperative' that instructors are able to reach the steering wheel in the event of an emergency - which a screen would only obstruct.

Sarah Rees, managing director of AA Driving School, told the BBC the decision was a 'welcome relief for the thousands of people in England' wanting to learn to drive, and the beginning of the end of 'an incredibly challenging time' for instructors.

She added, however, that instructors in other parts of the UK - where a return date was yet to be set - were 'being left in limbo'.

AA Driving School suspended all driving lessons on 25 March with the exception of critical workers.
