Family Complain About Parking Fees Because Their Five Cars Don't Fit On The Drive

Between Angela Hammond and her family, they have five cars and only three fit on the driveway meaning two are parked on the street

If you've got five cars, chances are you're going to need a pretty hefty driveway.

This is something that has proved quite a problem for Angela Hammond and her family, who have been paying to park since the introduction of 24 hour permit parking.

The family - who live in Hampshire - are rowing with the local council about their situation as they can only fit three of their vehicles on the drive.

Angela lives at the address with her husband, two daughters and two elderly parents. This brings with it not only a busy house but also a hectic parking situation.

In March last year, the council brought in 24-hour permit parking, leaving them wondering where to leave the remaining two cars which can't fit on the drive.

Angela managed to secure a disabled parking bay outside for her elderly dad, but one of her daughters is still unable to leave her car outside the property.

As a result, she's paying an annual amount of £255 ($350) in visitor parking tickets which only covers 204 days of the year. The rest of the time she puts her vehicle in a nearby train station car park which she forks out £5.50 ($7.50) a day for.

It's worth noting that the council says the visitor parking tickets are for visitors only (I mean, the clue is in the name, right?), but of course her daughter lives at the address.

Speaking out about the issue, Angela explained to Hampshire Live: "Once you've bought your limit for the year, you can't buy any more, which means you're not allowed visitors.

"So on Christmas Day my family won't be able to visit because we will have no visitor permits left.

"I have asked the council on numerous occasions if we can buy an annual permit, which I am more than happy to do, but they've said no.

"I've reached the point now where I'm quite tempted to park the car outside the house and keep getting tickets until they pay attention."

Rushmoor Borough Council said households with off-road parking (i.e. a driveway like Angela has got) can't buy residents' parking permits under its policy.

Councillor Maurice Sheehanm said: "Residents can buy up to 204 visitor parking sessions over a 12-month period.

"The purpose of the scheme is to help residents' visitors park, and they shouldn't be used to obtain permits for additional vehicles for a household, which some residents were doing when using the previous system.

"This caused real difficulties for other residents who rely on parking in the road because they do not have any off-street parking."

Sheehanm added that the council wrote to residents about the new rules and many were in favour of them, adding: "The public had four weeks to object to the proposals, but we received no significant objections."
