Britain's Oldest Lotto Winner Breaks Down Crying Discussing Win

An 87-year-old grandfather and his wife, 82, have become Britain's oldest ever lottery winners.

RAF veteran Dennis Banfield matched six numbers to scoop £18million, after playing since 1994 and insisting to his family that it was 'just a matter of time' until they won, the Mail Online reports.

Electrician Dennis burst into tears at a press conference earlier today as he discussed their big win. After playing three times a week for almost 30 years, Dennis revealed that Shirley had recently suggested they stop as 'they never win anything'. Can you imagine how glad his wife is that he ignored her, eh?

In the emotional conference, Dennis said he was glad he was able to make his daughters Tina, 54, and Karen, 51, 'financially secure'.

Shirley said the family celebrated the big win by going out for a carvery, which in classic nan-style she described as 'nothing special'.

She also revealed that her granddaughter refused to believe they'd hit the jackpot, telling her: "Gran, it's not April Fool's Day."

The couple, who will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary next month, said they're not in a rush to leave the house they've spent the last 50 years in, but that they will probably eventually downsize and get a bungalow. Who wins the lottery and downsizes? These two are amazing.

Dennis added that the idea of a chauffeur was 'quite tempting' due to his 'dodgy knee'; he also said the cash would mean they were able to travel to international sports events, buy new cars and enjoy a 'stress-free future'.

He also plans to splash out on a new suit, saying: "I'm going to have a suit made for me and I'm going to have it made so it's one of the best things I've ever had."

He told the press that the money would be split three ways, with his daughters each getting an equal share of a third of the jackpot.

Speaking of the moment he won, Dennis said: "Shirley went berserk, she went flying up in the air.

"Tina thought her mum had fallen over, and said: 'Has mum had a fall?' I had the ticket in my hand for all of five minutes and didn't see it again all day."

Daughter Tina said: "It's not every day your parents call you at 8am to tell you they have won the lottery.

"So when they did make that call on Sunday, my first thought was it must be a mistake and I immediately headed over there to check.

"Seeing those six numbers first on their TV screen and then also matching on the National Lottery site was a magical moment.

"It was equally wonderful calling my sister Karen, who like me, had received a call but assumed it was a mistake.'
