Fire crews have been battling a major blaze at a block of flats in south-west London.

Emergency services were called to the building in Sherbrooke Way, Worcester Park, just before 1.30am, where firefighters encountered an 'intense fire'.

The blaze quickly spread to all four floors of the building, but so far there have been no reports of any injuries.

Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters arrived on the scene, after the fire brigade's 999 control officers took 29 calls to the fire.

The fire was said to be 'under control' at 6.30am today, but crews will be remaining there throughout the day.

A statement from London Fire Brigade said: "The Brigade was called at 0127 and the fire was under control at 0631. Fire crews from New Malden, Sutton, Mitcham, Surbiton, Wimbledon, Kingston, Wallington and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

Group Manager Rick Ogden, who was at the scene, said: "On arrival, crews were faced with a well developed and intense fire.

"This was a challenging fire involving all floors of a four storey building. Firefighters worked hard to bring the blaze under control.

"Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the day (Monday, September 9). We would urge people to avoid the area if possible and for residents in the immediate area to keep their windows and doors closed."

Dean Fowler, who lives with his family on the top floor of the block of flats, told the BBC how he was awoken in the night by someone banging on his door.

He said: "I then heard someone screaming 'there's a fire, get out', and I just got my boys and went."

Mr Fowler said he's only been living in the building for three weeks. Depsite losing 'everything', he added: "We're alive, we're breathing, that's all that matters."

No injuries have been reported, with London Ambulance Service saying: "We have not treated any patients, however we remain on the scene as a precaution."
