People Are Not Happy About The Changes To Tesco Meal Deal

The new move has been blamed on the sugar-tax

People have reacted with outrage over a change to Tesco's lunchtime meal deal, due to the introduction of the new sugar-tax.

Lovers of the ever-popular Tesco £3 Meal Deal who chose to get themselves a bottle of Coca-Cola as part of their selection were only be able to pick up a 375ml bottle, rather than the 500ml that used to be on offer. Yet the price remains the same.

As ever, people are fuming on social media:

Tesco has responded on Twitter to one disgruntled customer:

The tax, which was brought in on Friday, will be added to a number of beverages which have a high sugar content with the aim of getting people to choosing healthier options. While some drinks manufacturers, such as Lucozade and Ribena, have opted to lower the amount of sugar in their drinks, others - including Coca-Cola and Pepsi - haven't.

The tax sees companies having to pay 18p per litre for drinks which contain more than 5g of sugar per 100ml or 24p per litre for those containing over 8g per 100ml.

So to put that in context, a 330ml can pf Coca Cola, which contains 10.6g sugar per 100ml, will go up by 8p, as will cans of Pepsi, which contains 11g of sugar per 100ml. The Government has said the money collected from the sugar tax will be used to fund sports in schools.

You really can't blame Tesco, as the introduction of the new tax means that all supermarkets are going to have raise the prices of their meal deals, to include the tax, or use smaller bottles, or not offer Coca-Cola at all, none of which are going to please customers.
