Retailer GAME has announced it will be closing 40 stores across the UK as part of its 'rationalisation programme'.

GAME has said 13 of its shops have been served their notice, including the Mansfield, Canterbury, Watford, Glasgow Fort and Leicester stores.

Yesterday, a further 14 stores were also served their notice, with GAME saying those affected are mostly owned by Intu and New River, and include stores in Derby, Norwich Chapelfield, Carmarthen, Lakeside and Bexleyheath.

In a statement, a spokesperson from GAME said: "We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations which could lead to a number of job losses.

"However, we are facing a challenging retail market and GAME with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents."

As yet, GAME has not announced how many jobs are at risk due to the closures.

Earlier this week, fellow high street retailer HMV announced it would be closing 10 stores at the end of January unless it can negotiate rent prices.

In a statement, HMV said: "There are currently 10 stores where negotiations with landlords are ongoing and we are hopeful of securing new deals. These stores are due to close later this month unless new deals can be agreed.

"The closures are no reflection on our superb staff, but where we are not able to come to a new agreement or relocate staff within the business elsewhere, unfortunately this does mean some of our staff will lose their jobs.

"Landlords are working hard with us to try to come to agreements, however in some cases the extortionate business rates just mean that certain locations are no longer viable."

The HMV stores at risk were named as Birmingham Bullring, Leeds Headrow, Bristol Cribbs, Edinburgh Ocean Terminal, Glasgow Braehead, Grimsby, Merryhill, Reading, Sheffield Meadowhall and Worcester.

This follows an announcement that three of the chain's stores are set to close at the end of January.

HMV Bury St Edmunds, Fopp Glasgow on Byres Road and HMV Nuneaton are all set to shut their doors, while stores in Lincoln and Plymouth will relocate at the start of February.
