Gary Glitter has received the Covid-19 vaccine, according to The Sun.

The pop star was convicted of attempted rape, indecent assault and having sex with a child under 13 in 2015 and is serving a 16-year sentence at HMP The Verne in Dorset.

His offences have no bearing on when he is eligible to receive the jab, and being 76-years-old, he is in one the country's top priority groups.

A government spokesperson told LADbible: "Prisoners are being vaccinated at the same time as the general public and in line with the priority groups set out by the independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation."

The inoculation of Glitter - real name Paul Gadd - didn't sit well with everyone though.

David Spencer, Director of the Centre For Crime Prevention, told The Sun: "There are plenty of key workers and vulnerable people still to receive their jab.

"It is wrong to single out criminals ahead of them. This decision needs an urgent rethink."

But many people didn't agree with Spencer, including former Chief Crown Prosecutor Nazir Afzal no less.

He said: "Gary Glitter went to prison on my watch thanks to a brilliant police/prosecution team.

"It's okay that he has been given a Covid vaccine because it protects everyone in that prison, the staff, their families & other prisoners inc those on remand who are innocent till proven guilty."

This point was echoed by many others on social media.

One person said: "Prisons are bound by duty of care towards their inmates. Regardless of what you or they think of Gary Glitter, there is no morality test to determine suitability for a Covid vaccine."

Another said: "I can't believe I have to say this - Gary Glitter being vaccinated is a good thing. All prisoners should be vaccinated.

"Indeed, one could argue that societies should be judged by how they treat those they dislike most. For once, we did OK here."

Glitter was first jailed in 1999 for downloading child porn. In 2006 he was imprisoned once again for molesting two girls aged 10 and 11.
