A great-grandmother is believed to be the oldest woman in the UK to get a tattoo after getting inked up for the first time at the grand age of 94.

Hilda West may be in her mid-90s, but that's not stopped her from chasing her lifelong dream of getting a tat.

And she didn't get just any tattoo, either, as she decided to use the occasion to honour her late husband Ernest and son David.

Hilda asked her carers at Castle Brook Care Home to arrange the tattoo for her, before she headed down to her local parlour in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, last Friday (13 September).

Hilda said: "I've always wanted a tattoo and I thought it'd be very nice to have Ernest's initials next to our son's.

"Ernest's birthday would have been this month and I wanted to do something special to mark the occasion.

"We were married for 70 years and I loved him very much."

Hilda's tattoo was carried out by artist Matty Gardner, who even agreed to do it for free.

Now Hilda is chuffed to bits with her new ink - and she's also proud that she's believed to be the oldest person in the country to get themselves a tat.

Hilda continued: "It went very smoothly. I didn't feel any pain. He was very good. I'm very happy with it. I'm glad I had it done.

"I believe I'm probably the oldest person in the country to have a tattoo and I'm very proud of them.

"I look at them every day and think of my husband and son.

Hilda was married to Ernest for 70 years.

"I'm not going to stop with the initials. I want a butterfly or peacock done next."

Matty, who runs Ink on Skinz, said: "It's nice to do something nice for somebody.

"I've tattooed people who quite old, but not that old. It was very out of the ordinary.

"It was all over in 20 minutes. She handled it better than some of the body builders I've tattooed."

Matty shared a news story about Hilda's tattoo on the Facebook page for Ink on Skinz, where his followers had nothing but love for what she'd decided to do.

One Facebooker commented: "That's well awesome."

Another person added: "I love this!"

Way to go, Hilda. How about a full sleeve next?
