Bosses at the country's largest airport have announced they will install new 3D scanners so holidaymakers can carry liquids in their hand luggage.

According to reports, the £50 million pieces of kit will mean passengers at Heathrow will no longer have to take liquids and laptops out of their cases and transfer them into transparent bags before they pass through security.

The scanners will use the same technology as CT machines and will replace the traditional x-rays currently used to check carry-on luggage.

It's also claimed the move will mean a reduction in the amount of plastic used, as holidaymakers will no longer have to put bottles of liquid into transparent bags in order to carry onboard.

The airport hopes to have the new computer tomography (CT) scanners installed by 2022.

The ban on liquids 100ml was brought in 13 years ago, following a foiled transatlantic terror plot.

Passengers currently have to put small bottles of liquid into a plastic bag.

A terror group which was linked to Al Qaeda had planned to detonate devices on half a dozen flights from London to the US and Canada. After uncovering the plans, the airport introduced an immediate ban, leading to massive queues.

Speaking about the new scanners, Heathrow's chief operations officer, Chris Garton, told the BBC it will allow passengers to concentrate on catching their flight.

He said: "Heathrow has a proud history of investing in making every journey better and that's why we're delighted to be rolling out our new CT equipment.

"This cutting-edge kit will not only keep the airport safe with the latest technology, but will mean that our future passengers can keep their focus on getting on with their journeys and less time preparing for security screening."

The new scanners would allow holidaymakers to bring liquids and laptops through security.

Aviation Minster Baroness Vere said the new tech will help keep passengers safe.

She added: "Passenger safety remains our top priority, and this programme clearly shows the huge importance we place on security.

"This innovative new equipment will ensure Heathrow continues to provide a safe and smooth travel experience for passengers, as we look to roll out this new screening technology at airports across the country."

According to reports, the technology is already being used in airports across the US, including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport and Chicago's O'Hare.

Bosses hope to have the scanners installed by 2020.

And by 2020 the US Transportation Security Administration plans to have deployed another 300 scanners.

But toiletries aren't the only cause of stress for holidaymakers. One of the biggest problems passengers face is trying to fit enough plug adapters into one suitcase to keep their various gadgets charged for the duration of their sojourn.

Well, one savvy holidaymaker may have just found the solution to this age-old dilemma, after she shared an incredibly simple life hack that will put an end to that headache once and for all.

Sasha, from Nottingham, revealed that rather than filling her case with dozens of the things, she just brings one extension lead.
