Ordinarily, an inconveniently located postbox is one that's far away from your home or difficult to find. However, a postbox in Birmingham, UK, is causing a dispute for the exact opposite reason.

The issues surrounding the problematic postbox arose after an unnamed resident spent thousands of pounds on unauthorised work, having his driveway widened and a set of gates installed in front of his property.

But with the work complete, the 100-year-old postbox now sits in the way of the homeowner's extra wide drive and he has subsequently asked Royal Mail if it can be relocated.

However, neighbours are not best pleased by his request and councillors in the Birmingham suburb of Moseley have received numerous complaints about the building work - which is now being investigated to see whether it met planning regulations.

The postbox definitely looks silly sat there.

An angry neighbour - who like the homeowner, wished to remain anonymous - said it was 'arrogant' of the man to request that the postbox should be moved.

He said: "How on earth he thought it was a good idea, I'll never know. Its looks absolutely ridiculous.

"A lot of people use that postbox so why should it be relocated just for one person? He hasn't had the kerb dropped so I'm assuming he has not got permission for this.

"Surely he realised this was going to leave him with a massive postbox blocking his drive.

"I hope the council come down hard on him because it's rather arrogant of him to just expect it to be moved."

The anonymous neighbour makes some very valid points. You'd think either the homeowner or the builders would have noticed the big red postbox in the way at some point when planning and constructing the extension.

So did he think he'd save a few quid by asking Her Majesty's Mail to shift it? Or did he just reckon it wouldn't be that much of a pain, only to realise as soon as the work was done that it actually was a pain?

Well, we'll probably never know as the homeowner has declined to comment.

A Birmingham City Council spokesman has spoken though, as spokesmen tend to do.

He said: "Alleged unauthorised works have recently been brought to our attention which are currently subject to an enforcement investigation.

"Discussions are taking place between council officers and the home owner in an attempt to bring this matter to a satisfactory conclusion."

It will be interesting to hear what the council satisfactorily concludes. Looks like this one is far from over.
