UK homeowners will get £2 billion ($2.49bn) of vouchers to insulate their homes as part of the Green Homes Grant scheme.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak plans to create more than 100,000 green jobs for plumbers, builders and tradesmen that were hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

It's expected that thousands of homes will be in receipt of the grants of up to £5,000 ($6,000) - with some of the poorest families looking to get vouchers up to the value of £10,000 ($12,500) to make their home environmentally friendly.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to announce the Green Homes Grant scheme on Wednesday.

Homeowners will be able to spend the vouchers on loft, wall and floor insulation, eco-friendly boilers, heat pumps, double or triple-glazed windows, low-energy lighting and energy-efficient doors.

The scheme is expected to go live in September and the Treasury estimates the work could end up saving families around £600 ($750) per year on their energy bills.

Speaking to The Sun, Mr Sunak said: "As Britain recovers from the outbreak, it's vital we do everything in our power to support and protect livelihoods across the nation.

"Our Green Homes Grant will not only cut families' bills by making their homes more energy efficient, it will also kick-start our economy by creating thousands of green jobs and supporting those skilled tradespeople who are ready to work."

The government funding will cover two thirds of the work being done. For example if you're getting cavity wall and floor insulation for £4,000 - you would have to pay £1,320 and the grant would pay the remaining £2,680.

Those on the lowest incomes will not have to pay anything towards the environmentally friendly home improvements.

This comes after Mr Sunak was urged to give people £500 vouchers to spend in shops badly hit by the coronavirus lockdown.

Again, this is another bid to boost the economy and get things up and running once again - which was suggested by an independent think tank.

The proposed amount is £500 ($620) for each adult in the UK, and £250 ($310) per child.

The vouchers themselves would only be redeemable in areas like hospitality - so, the pub then? - as well as face to face retail - no more Amazon deliveries - and tourism.

James Smith, a research director at the Resolution Foundation think tank, told The Guardian: "Social distancing has huge implications for firms in sectors like retail, hospitality, tourism and leisure that will last into the reopening phase.

"That is why the jobs of so many workers in these sectors are in the firing line. The chancellor's recovery package on Wednesday should reflect this unique economic challenge.

"As well as setting out the biggest ever peacetime job support programme, the chancellor should get Britain spending in places where it's needed most."
