A daredevil known as 'The French Spiderman' is climbing the tallest building in the City of London - without ropes.

Footage has emerged on social media showing 56-year-old Frenchman Alain Robert climbing the 755ft (230m) tall Heron Tower, an office block on Bishopsgate.

It is the tallest building in the City of London financial district and the third tallest in Britain, behind The Shard and 1 Canada Square, also both in London.

The urban climber has previously scaled world landmarks such as Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Empire State Building in New York, the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House.

Well, this guy clearly has a death wish...

According to Sky News, the risky climb took him around 50 minutes with him using just his bare hands with no safety gear or rope in sight.

He said it was a 'medium' climb - not 'easy' but not 'ridiculous' either. We'll take your word for it, mate.

Before setting off, Alain predicted that he would be arrested following the feat and told Sky News: "I'm not crazy. What I'm doing may seem crazy but I'm not that crazy."

Anyone who says they're not crazy definitely are, let's put it that way.

He explained: "If you are shaving, or if you are cooking, you can also think about many other things. But when you are climbing, as I'm not using any safety devices, when life is at stake, I guarantee that you are focused."

The Evening Standard reported that road closures were put in place due to the stunt with officials urging people to avoid the area during the ascent.

City of London officers arrived at 1.37pm, set up a taped cordon stopping traffic around the building and ushered the growing crowd to move back and keep out of the road.

Everyone watching burst into cheers when he waved from three quarters of the way up before Alain raised his hands in the air on reaching his goal.

You would hope he's probably put a lot of thought and planning into this... oh wait, according to Sky, he only thought of climbing the tower after seeing it in pictures - two days ago.

In November 2012 after he was spotted inside The Shard, the building's owners obtained an injunction banning him from ever returning.

A City of London Police spokesman said: "There are currently road closures in place on Camomile Street down to Bevis Marks due to a man free-climbing the Sales Force Tower at 110 Bishopsgate.

"Our officers are in attendance. Please avoid the area if possible."

Maybe it's time to give up now. He's tempting fate.
