An intensive care consultant has gone on the radio to plead with people to take the government's social distancing advice seriously, warning us that going out is killing people.

Jack phoned in to LBC to explain what it's like working on the front line of the health service and spoke of his worries that the NHS might not be able to cope in a few weeks' time adding that him and his colleagues have cried over the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Tom Swarbrick, Jack said: "It is beyond me why people don't see what they are creating by just continuing to go out.

"We are treating the people that got infected two weeks ago and we're getting full so people getting infected now who will be treated in two weeks' time, I don't know what's going to happen."

He went on: "The only way this virus stops is if we stop touching each other, if we got to keep two metres away from each other, we got to wash our hands and just not touch anybody and it may not be you that gets it.

"But for every one person that gets it off you, by the time 10 people have got it, then it's passed through 10 lots of infection, we're up to tens of thousands of people who will have this virus, of which 10 percent will come into hospital, of which four percent will come into ICU. We're full, we're expanding."

Covent Garden market in London is currently deserted, showing that some are taking social distancing seriously.

Speaking before the Government asked pubs, cafes and restaurants to close on Friday (20 March), Jack said it was 'beyond immoral' that some people were still considering dining out for Mothering Sunday.

It was partly because some people were ignoring the kind of social distancing advice Jack is reiterating here that pubs, restaurants, cafes, cinema and theatres were asked to close two days ago.

When LBC host Tom Swarbrick made the point that Jack sounded not just frustrated but 'quite upset', Jack replied: "I'm furious. I've been now doing this for, I don't know, three weeks we've been doing this. It's getting worse.

"There are doctors going down, there are nurses going down. Healthcare workers will die, there's been people in Italy, many healthcare workers that have died.

"I've cried, my colleagues have cried. I've been doing this for 25 years, I've never seen anything anywhere near this. Swine flu was a ripple compared to this. It's catastrophic."
