If you've been working from home over the past few months, you may be able to claim up to £156 to cover expenses.

Many of us continue to work remotely as offices up and down the country remain shut due to coronavirus - a bittersweet change that has seen us grappling with dodgy WiFi from the comfort of our pyjamas.

But what some of you may not know is that if you have been working remotely, you might be able to claim back some cash for your troubles.

Earlier this year, the government announced that employers could pay workers up to £6 a week to cover 'additional costs' if you have to work from home, amounting to £26 a month.

As the change came into effect on 6 April 2020, this means you could be owed up to £156 if you've been working from your house between then and now.

You're able to claim on anything related to your work, such as business calls or the added cost of gas and electricity.

The government website says: "You may be able to claim tax relief for some of the bills you have to pay because you have to work at home on a regular basis. You cannot claim tax relief if you choose to work from home.

"You can only claim for things to do with your work, for example, business telephone calls or the extra cost of gas and electricity for your work area.

"You cannot claim for things that you use for both private and business use, for example, rent or broadband access.

"From 6 April 2020 your employer can pay you up to £6 a week (£26 a month) to cover your additional costs if you have to work from home. For previous tax years the rate is £4 a week (£18 a month).

"You will not need to keep any records."

The only catch to bear in mind is that you won't be able to claim the tax relief back if you're working at home voluntarily.

To find out more, head to the government website - where you'll also be able to check whether you're eligible to claim.
