A not-so-secret beauty spot in Wales has been closed off to the public completely after the landowner got sick of it being 'trashed' by visitors. See, this is why we can't have nice things.

The owner of Blue Lake, near the village of Fairbourne in Gwynedd, has closed off the entrance to the spot with 60 tonnes of slate, after he became tired of clearing up the mess left by visitors, according to the BBC.

Thanks to social media, the area became known as a 'secret' spot, with its vibrantly coloured lake providing visitors with plenty of opportunities for photos destined to go on the 'Gram - in fact, people have flocked to swim and camp at the lake during summer weekends.

The landowner was greeted by mounds of rubbish regularly.

Sadly though, the site was left in a state on a number of occasions, with the Beeb reporting that things left for Mr Titley to clean up included disposable barbecues, beer bottles and cans, a tent and even human excrement and used condoms.

Allan Titley, 70, used a digger to block the flooded quarry in Gwynedd, North Wales. He had bought his farm in the 1980s, and up until now has always allowed visitors to access the lake - even though it's in the middle of the land that he privately owns, and travelling through that land is the only way to access it.

The lake has been an attraction for over 30 years.

Mr Titley said: "Thirty years ago they respected the place. It is a beautiful beauty spot and it has just been trashed.

"It's private land in the middle of my farm. They are destroying the land."

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mr Titley said: "Litter is everywhere now. In the whole of Wales, I don't think there's a beauty spot that hasn't been trashed.

"We also have problems such as dogs chasing sheep. People have no education and just don't care about the countryside.

"I have never stopped anyone going to the lake before... In the past 10 years it has gradually got worse and worse."

He was even contacted by the council about the rubbish - and said this was what forced his hand.

Mr Titley said: "I was threatened with court action for fly tipping four or five months ago by trading standards because they couldn't find out who had dropped the rubbish and it was on my land. That was the last straw. I cleaned it up myself."
