The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is looking for volunteers to lend a much-needed hand at London and Whipsnade Zoos.

The zoos need 'an army of volunteers' to come forward after coronavirus lockdown measures presented them with 'the biggest challenge faced in our history'.

Volunteers will take on stewarding roles and will be responsible for ensuring visitors have safe, informative and enjoyable trips.

The duties of stewarding volunteers will be to ensure that visitors:

  • Feel welcome and supported during their visit
  • Navigate their way around the zoos safely within social distancing measures
  • Have a fun and informative visit
  • Learn about the work of the zoos and wildlife conservation programmes

Sir David Attenborough backed the zoos' fundraising appeal last month, and now they're asking for help from people who can lend their time.

Speaking to the Metro, volunteer manager Rhiannon Green said: "We are delighted to have the zoos open again, but we are facing operational challenges that are new to us. We know from the heart-warming response to our fundraising appeal that people really want to help us.

"For some people sparing time might be how they can help us best - especially those on furlough, or whose travel plans have been disrupted.

"We need cheery, flexible people who can help visitors enjoy their day while respecting the measures that keep everyone safe."
