Bank Holidays are sweet enough as it is, but when you add scorching hot, record temperatures into the mix, they get even better.

Almost all of the UK is basking in a heatwave that fell perfectly in line with the first May Bank Holiday, but temperatures in London and the south east are set to reach scorchio heights.

Some are predicting that the mercury will rise to 29 degrees in England's capital today, which if true would make it the hottest Early May Bank Holiday for more than 40 years.

Meteorologist Greg Drewhurst told the Evening Standard: "There will be plenty of sunshine with light winds with highs of 28C, possibly 29C in London.

"It will be cooler around the south east in the mid to high twenties. UV levels will be high."

Drewhurst added: "Tomorrow will be dry and sunny with the odd risk of showers. London will see highs of 27 degrees.

"Wednesday will see a change with much cooler weather and sunny spells with temperatures around 20 to 22C.

"It will slowly start cooling with a risk of showers at the weekend."

If the heat manages to reach the 29-degree mark it would put the UK level with the Caribbean islands of Barbados and St. Lucia.

Weak weather fronts moving from west to east mean there will be a fresher feel to the air from the middle of the week onwards but temperatures in the south east of England will still be reaching somewhere up in the mid twenties.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told Metro: "So far today, London and the south east is getting the hottest temperatures in the UK.

"The warmest spot so far is St James Park in London which is 22.4C but there has been widespread warm weather across southern and central England with a lot of places in the 20-21C region.

"However, in north west Wales there is still a lot of cloud and sea fog, Aberdaron is low as 9.5C so not everyone in the UK is having a warm day.

"The peak this weekend will be Monday where somewhere in the south of England will hit 27C or 28C which will mean it will be the hottest May Day Bank Holiday Monday on record, and as that was 23.6C then it should easily be reached.

"However, everywhere in the UK should get at least one warm day at the very least this Bank Holiday Weekend, the only exception being the very north west of Scotland.'
