Millions of people across the UK have been stepping out onto balconies and doorsteps or leaning out of windows to show their appreciation during Clap for Carers for our NHS, and last night a ferry even got involved. Watch below:

Yep, London's Woolwich Ferry took some time out yesterday to honk its horn and spin doughnuts on the River Thames to thank front line workers.

Footage filmed by Becky Stout shows the ferry lit up and spinning in a circle while honking its horn.

For the past four weeks every Thursday at 8pm people across the UK have been taking part in a united Clap for Carers to show appreciation for those who are working tirelessly looking after coronavirus patients.

As you can imagine, the display of appreciation didn't go unnoticed by surprised Londoners who took to social media to praise the ferry captain for taking part.

One person wrote: "The fab crew of theWoolwich ferry not only sound their horn to let us know its 8pm and time for #ClapForCarers - tonight Dame Vera gave a twirl!"

While a second added: "Nice touch from the TFL Woolwich Ferry doing lovely (and nippy) 360 spins for #clapforheroes".

Elsewhere in London, Number 10 confirmed that Boris Johnson also took part in the clap following his recent release from hospital.

A spokesperson said: "Like millions of people across the country, the Prime Minister joined in the clap for carers this evening, to say thank you for the incredible efforts of the country's doctors, nurses and care workers."

But not everyone who took part did so sensibly - a clip shared online has caused outrage as it shows people gathered closely together, completely ignoring social distancing rules while stood on Westminster Bridge last night.

The footage shows a huge crowd, including police officers and parents with children, stood around joining in the applause.

Dr Damir Rafi, who filmed the video, posted on Twitter: "I'm a doctor working at the hospital that's right there. And yes, I was also somewhat perplexed by the lack of social distancing."

Another doctor, who works at a hospital in London, commented: "Seeing masses yesterday on Westminster bridge clapping together, without distancing including police. I think it is an important gesture but a little ironic if in a large group."
