A dad-of-three who was jailed for his role in a drug gang claimed he 'didn't know' he was carrying £1m of cocaine in his car.

Anwar Rahim travelled from Liverpool to Glasgow to drop off a haul of strong cocaine with a street value of around £1m in June 2016.

It was later revealed he had been working for John and Alan Tobin who supplied large amounts of drugs up and down the UK and were at the centre of the biggest drug's seizure in UK history.

Rahim was seen by police driving into a car park before another man took a black holdall out of his vehicle and put it into his own car, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The other man was stopped by cops and the bag was found to contain six kilos of cocaine.

At a trial in 2019, Prosecutor Kath Harper said: "Police found that the holdall which had been in his vehicle contained six 1kg bags of cocaine which were 80 percent.

"The average purity of cocaine in the west of Scotland is 16 percent."

Rahim was also pulled over by police and found to have £117,390 in cash.

Appearing in court, Rahim pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine; but his solicitor claimed his client was unaware he was carrying drugs until 'some way' into the journey.

Solicitor advocate Graham Brown said: "Mr Rahim became unemployed and lost his business and was doing odd jobs.

"He was asked to drive to Glasgow and did not ask a lot of questions. He did not know that drugs were involved until some way into the journey. When he spoke with his employers. He was just a courier, a very small cog."

He was jailed for five-and-a-half years.

At the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lord Beckett said: "Mr Rahim this serious crime does seem to be out of character for you.

"In a letter to the court you speak of your shame and contrition, however this is a matter you brought on yourself and you made matters worse by not appearing for a court hearing. It was two years later you were arrested."

Rahim has now been pictured for the first time after the brothers he was working for have been jailed for almost 40 years.
