Man Finds 'Dozens' Of Deadly Brazilian Wandering Spiders On Banana

A man was left horrified after spotting a strange sac on a banana - that turned out to be filled with dozens of spiders.

Nick Southam, 49, said he was tucking into a banana he'd picked up at Lidl, when he spotted a weird lump on the side, which 'suddenly popped' and inside were dozens of spiders. Lovely.

Engineer Nick said he quickly managed to snap a photo of one of the spiders, which he shared on iSpot, a specialist website to help identify wildlife.

The spider was identified as a potentially deadly Brazilian wandering spider, also known as a Ctenidae - a species known for having a highly toxic bite.

Nick, from Droitwich, Worcestershire, said: "Halfway through, I noticed a lump on the banana skin.

"I cut the lump open after finishing it, and tiny spiders came out. It had small eggs on the side of the banana.

"They were dozens of the tiny things but I didn't know where they came from. They were not very active and they would not survive well in our climate.

"There were only a few live ones as most of the spiders were dead."

The spiders can grow up to have a whopping 20cm (8in) leg span and usually live off insects, other spiders and small reptiles or mice.

If a human is unfortunate enough to be bitten by one, they will experience 'severe burning pain' at the site of the bite, along with sweating and goosebumps.

Within half an hour the symptoms can become a lot more serious, affecting blood pressure and heart rate. A bite can also cause nausea, abdominal cramping, hypothermia, vertigo, blurred vision, convulsions and excessive sweating as the body goes into shock. So not very pleasant.

The infested banana was one of four Nick had bought from Lidl in Droitwich last Monday.

Nick added: "It was only after I realised when I researched 'spider in banana' that this has happened before.

"There have been a few incidents over the past few years of people finding spiders in banana skins.

"I did some research and looked at photos of them when they're grown.

"I also found out they're the deadliest spider in the world. I find it interesting if a little scary."

A little scary? I'd have burned my entire house to the ground, mate.
