A huge rescue effort is underway to recover a man who is dangling upside down at the top of a 300ft industrial chimney.

Emergency services are trying to rescue the man who is thought to have been stuck there for seven hours and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service have put out an appeal for a cherry picker.

One video shows a helicopter near to where the person is hanging upside down. The Coastguard helicopter was deployed at 8.15am to the Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle, Cumbria.

It is understood the alarm was raised at around 3am and a police drone is checking on the man's condition. He is reported to have become stuck since just after 2.20am.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "We are currently dealing with an incident at Dixon's Chimney, Carlisle. Officers became aware of a man trapped at height in the area.

"We are currently working with partner agencies to free the man. Road closures are currently in place at Stanhope Road, Charlotte Street and Shaddongate where it meets Bridge Street (A595)."

John McVay, Cumbria Fire and rescue, Area Manager said: "This is a very complex and difficult process given the obvious dangers to the man and the extreme difficulty in gaining access to him in a way which will keep him and emergency services safe.

"I can assure the public that the emergency services are working tirelessly and effectively together to resolve this issues safely for all and that the protection of life is our first priority.

"I ask people impacted by the incident and the road closures to continue to show patience. I'd also like to ask anyone who has a cherry picker in excess of 90 metres [295 foot] within Cumbria to please contact Cumbria police or Cumbria Fire and rescue service on 999."
