A man took to Reddit to share an open letter to a woman he worries he may have freaked out, while explaining he was actually trying to protect her.

Using the screen name Karlos, the man apologises for scaring the woman as he followed her back to her car while in Belfast city centre, but goes on to explain that he was actually watching her after he spotted 'two suspicious-looking men' loitering nearby.

Beginning his post, which he titled: 'To the girl that I followed today for almost four blocks to her car', he writes: "We were walking in opposite directions near the new student accommodation, you briefly looked at me and kept walking and a couple of seconds later I turned around and started following you, I notice the moment you realised that I was following you by how your pace changed, your shoulders squared and you grabbed your phone."

Anyone who has ever walked home alone at night only to realise that someone is walking a little bit too close behind them will probably be able to empathise with how the mystery woman was feeling.

However, the poster goes on to explain 'what you probably never noticed was the other two guys, the ones on the other sidewalk, the ones that pointed at you and started to follow you before we crossed the first time'. Before adding that the men appeared to be on drugs or drunk or both.

He later explains that he is sorry that he scared the woman, and that he was 'really scared' himself, before explaining he was 'no hero by any means'.

But in response to his post many Redditors disagreed and heaped praise on the man for his actions, which may have stopped the woman from being hurt.

One wrote: "That was NOT an ending that I expected. You are an amazing person, thank you for keeping an eye on that woman. You probably saved her life."

While a second added: "That's a good deed, friend. I'm a woman with two daughters. I hope someone would do the same for them, or me. Wouldn't it be nice if we all looked out for one another like this? Well done."

Others took the time to thank him - with one commentator writing that her daughter was at Belfast University and that this could very well have been her.
