Manchester Voted The Third Best City In The World

Manchester was beaten only by San Francisco and Amsterdam in TimeOut's poll of great cities worldwide

Manchester has been named the third best city in the world in an annual list compiled by TimeOut.

That means that the jewel in the crown of the North of England beat cities such as Tokyo, New York, Paris, and Barcelona to sit below only two cities on the list of 37.

Those two cities above - San Francisco and Amsterdam.

Seems fair enough, they're both great cities as well.

In case you're sat down there enjoying an £8.50 pint, London finished in 13th place on the list.

Pathetic, really.

Just kidding, but in the eyes of TimeOut, Manchester is well clear of anywhere else in Britain.

Talk about putting Manny on the map, right?

The list is compiled using thousands of opinions from TimeOut readers on the best places to live around the world, and Manchester was the only UK city to feature in the top 10.

In their description, Manchester is described thusly: "Manchester sure is a resilient place. All things considered, it's thrived over the past year - with communities really banding together through the toughest of times.

"Mancunians are a very proud people, and so it's no wonder 71 percent described the city as 'creative' in this year's Index.

"This is the home of Factory Records, the Fall and The Smiths, after all, and in 2021 the likes of Manchester International Festival (MIF) and Grayson's Art Club have continued to show this city really punches when it comes to big, splashy cultural events.

"On a more local level, small firms like Result CIC offered free mental health support to frontline workers, while the Eagle and Child pub gave away 4,500 meals to vulnerable locals."

As for the city sitting top of the list, San Francisco was praised for its 'progressive politics', with 73 percent of those polled saying that the US city is a world leader in terms of its 'accepting' nature.

It also gained points for having taken an impressive and well-considered response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On San Fran's charms, TimeOut wrote: "San Francisco is, in many ways, the ideal spot to ride out the pandemic with year-round mild weather, a thriving restaurant and take-out scene, high-quality cannabis, and endless, accessible, adventures in nature - from hikes in wine country to days spent lounging on the beach.

"Now, as the city enjoys high vaccination rates (and rules banning the unvaccinated from many indoor spaces), it's one of the safest places to enjoy the kind of city life we've all been missing."
