Video footage shows the moment passersby intervened as police received reports of a group of men stealing bicycles in Victoria Park, East London.

In the clip, several people can be seen standing in front of a bike to stop one of the group as he attempts to grab it from metal railings by the park.

According to a witness, who spoke to the Daily Mail, the thieves had cut through the locks with an angle-grinder before they tried to remove them from the railings at around 3pm yesterday (Sunday 21 March).

They told the outlet: "It was 3pm and the park was very busy. Without a care in the world, the boys gathered around the bikes and one had a yellow hand-held angle grinder and just started cutting the locks off the bikes - sparks were flying.

"Everyone stood back in disbelief until an older lady started shouting and then more people got involved. Thankfully they didn't get away with any bikes this time.

"The police arrived a few minutes after the incident and they spoke to a few people.

"I've never seen anything like it and I go to the park most weekends."

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it had received reports of a group attempting to steal bicycles, and that members of the public had stepped in to stop them.

A statement provided to LADbible said: "Police were called around 15:00hrs on Sunday, 21 March to Victoria Park to reports of four men trying to steal bicycles by using an angle grinder.

"The men were described as aged 15 to 25 and two were on bicycles.

"The men were disturbed by members of the public and made off before officers arrived, no bikes were stolen."

In the footage, two members of the group appear to flee the park on their bikes, leaving the remaining two by the bikes.

Someone approaches one of the men and confronts him, as the other runs off into the busy park.

A scuffle breaks out as people pull the man to the ground as passers-by in the park watch on.

According to the Daily Mail, he eventually managed to break free with the help of his accomplice, and fled the scene.
