"When I heard MI5 was joining Instagram I was shaken, but not stirred."

MI5 has posted for the first time on its official Instagram account, but people are baffled as to what the photo actually is.

The post, which went up this morning (22 April) shows the inside of a building, but from below, it kind of looks like an eye.

Because of the perspective, it isn't immediately obvious that it's taken from the ground floor of the headquarters, which has the location tagged as Thames House.

The caption reads: "The secret to successful spying? Consider all angles. It'll give you a better view...

"This is the view our staff see as they enter MI5 HQ in Thames House, London. Behind these pods lie some of the UK's best kept secrets.

"Follow us as we open our doors to Instagram, granting you exclusive views of life inside MI5."

The comments range from funny, to pure weird, with a load of people simply asking for a job.

One follower wrote: "Can't for the life of me work out the perspective on this pic but then again I did just wake up. Anyway can I be a spy?"

Fresh from Facebook, another user replied: "Can I be a spy? x I love the movie Kingsman."

One guy was a bit overexcited, saying: "What's in the pods? Frozen people? Where's the Martini, tuxedos and guns?"

Someone else joked: "When I heard MI5 was joining Instagram I was shaken, but not stirred."

There was always going to be one, wasn't there.

Back in October 2020, Director General Ken McCallum - who is also MI5's youngest-ever boss - Ken McCallum explained: "If I want one thing to characterise my tenure in this role, it's for MI5 to open up and reach out in new ways."

And he added: "Much of what we do needs to remain invisible, but what we are doesn't have to be. In fact, opening up is key to our future success."

He explained: "We must get past whatever martini-drinking stereotypes may be lingering by conveying a bit more of what today's MI5 is actually like, so that people don't rule themselves out based on perceived barriers such as socio-economic background, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, disability, or which part of the country they happen to have been born in."
