Southgate Tube Station in North London has been evacuated by police following a 'minor explosion', with a 'suspicious package' also being reported.

A 'small number of people' have received treatment from medics at the scene, police have said, later confirming they do not believe the incident to be terror-related.

British Transport Police tweeted that officers are responding to a 'suspicious package'.

According to the Daily Express, one witness claimed to have noticed a burning rubber smell, after which passengers ran for the station exits.

As police's investigations continue, parts of the Piccadilly line have been closed while trains are currently not stopping at Southgate due to concerns following the incident.

There is currently no Piccadilly line service between Arnos Grove and Cockfosters.

Emergency services were scrambled to the station shortly after 7pm, with specialist police among their number

The Express reports that, according to the Metropolitan Police, officers are working to establish the cause of the blast.

Police add that the explosion 'appears to have been minor', with no serious injuries believed to have occurred.

Twitter user Hal wrote: "I was at Southgate Station when this commotion started. I could smell burning (like rubber) and saw multiple people hurrying for the exits. I was outside the station about to enter the 125 bus.

"Do not think this is fear mongering or fake news. It's very real."

Fellow user Salamander Sean added: "We have been told to stay inside. Suspect device found/gone off inside tube. Saw one person coming out on a stretcher."

City worker Darren Yarlett, 36, told the Evening Standard that he was attempting to drive home in the area, but found the roads had been tapered off.

"The police moved us on, but they said there was an explosion in the station," he said. "There must be around 50 or 60 police, an ambulance, fire arms and dog units."

Labour MP for Enfield Southgate, Bambos Charalambous, tweeted:

According to the Guardian, the police services investigating the inciden included Scotland Yard's counter terrorism command. However, BTP later tweeted: "Enquiries continue but we do not believe this to be terror related at [this] time."
