A woman has said she feels 'ugly' after she revealed the horrific injuries she sustained after being punched while on her way home from a beauty pageant.

Emma Clarke was on top of the world after competing in the North East Calendar Girls final in Newcastle over the weekend. But her delight soon turned to despair when she was brutally attacked in front of her family.

The 27-year-old says she was punched by a complete stranger as she stepped off the city's Metro service on Sunday, badly breaking her nose.

The young model claimed the attack was totally unprovoked and police have since confirmed that a 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Local police have also confirmed that the man has since been released under investigation and that enquiries are still ongoing.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Ms Clarke said she was 'devastated' by the attack which has left her feeling as though she looks like something from the 'Muppets'.

She said: "I can't sneeze without the pain going right through to the back of my eyes.

"I'd had a brilliant night and the competition was fantastic...it had really helped improve my confidence as I suffer with mental health issues.

"This has knocked me right back. I now feel ugly and I look like something from the Muppets because of my nose."

She added: "I'm just devastated and feel absolutely awful."

Ms Clarke claims she was verbally abused at Simonside Metro Station, in South Tyneside, before being assaulted.

She also says she now needs to have an operation to fix her broken nose.

She says the attack left her feeling 'ugly' and now needs to undergo surgery.

She said: "I went to see about it at the hospital and they said it is a canny bad break. They can operate but can't do anything for the next five days.

"In the meantime, the pain is really bad. I've had a couple of codeine but I am in agony."

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 11.55pm last night (Sunday), police received a report of assault at an address on Collin Drive, South Shields.

"It was reported that a 27-year-old woman had sustained injuries to her nose after being assaulted.

"Officers attended and a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. He has been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing."
