The M6 motorway has now reopened following yesterday's incident involving two lorries - one of which had been carrying 32,000 litres of 'concentrated gin', which started leaking out onto the carriageway.

The two vehicles collided at around 5.30pm last night, meaning the M6 northbound carriageway had to be closed between junctions 19 and 20.

As one of the vehicles transporting thousands of litres of 'flammable' gin was spilling out onto the road, fire crews had to douse the motorway in foam as traffic backed up around them.

After the fire crews worked through the night to secure the road, Cheshire Police confirmed this morning the M6 had reopened in both directions.

Nantwich Police, meanwhile, joked on Twitter: "Last night's major #gincident was on the rocks for a while but after plenty shaking and even more stirring the M6 is back open!

"Tanqueray no one was seriously injured and everything's now been schwepped away."

One Twitter user quipped back: "Were they in the sloe lane?"

Another wrote: "Glad no one was ginjured."

A third said: "Nice to see you're trying to keep your spirits up!"

The incident involved two heavy goods vehicles on the northbound carriageway.

One of the vehicles was a tanker carrying 'approximately 32,000 litres of concentrated gin', which Cheshire Police said was 'leaking onto the carriageway'.

A statement said: "Due to the flammability of the alcohol a decision was taken to close the motorway in both directions between junctions 19 and 20."

A 300m cordon was also put in place as a 'precautionary measure', while a number of motorists who were stuck in the trapped traffic were evacuated from their vehicles.

Firefighters coated the spilt alcohol with foam to prevent it from igniting, and also worked to contain the leaked fluid in order for it to be pumped into a replacement tanker.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.
