A mum has been hit with a £75,000 ($100,121) medical bill after giving birth prematurely in the US.

Amy Collins, from Birmingham, UK, needed an emergency caesarean to deliver William Collins in Texas on 11 December.

He was born at 24 weeks and weighed just 1lb 9ozs and needed specialist care in hospital, where he remains to this day.

Amy, 30, had been due to fly back to Birmingham on 13 December, but with no insurance she has now been left with a medical bill of £75,000 for the delivery and care of her son - with the charges set to continue to rise further.

William's grandmother Sarah Covey told Birmingham Live: "I am worried sick. My grandson William is an amazing fighter and doing so well but they have built up a medical bill of over $100,000 because it's America and not our NHS.

"I am absolutely scared to death for them. William will be in hospital for months and the medical bill could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"Amy has had to set up a payment plan but I am not sure how she is going to afford to pay it. It is just a nightmare."

Amy has been married to Texan engineer Greg Collins for the last year and is also mum to seven-year-old daughter Ava. She has been living on and off in the US since meeting Greg online three years ago and plans to apply for American citizenship.

Now, with William still receiving treatment at Cook Children's Medical Center, Sarah said she can't stop worrying about her daughter and new grandson.

Sarah, 48, said: "I have got to fly out to Texas in January to bring Ava back so Amy can concentrate on looking after William until he is able to leave hospital.

"It is obviously hugely worrying times as William is so small and underdeveloped but then we have all the financial worries on top of this.

"I can't stop crying at the moment."

Sarah has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page in a bid to help pay for some of her daughter's rocketing medical fees.

On the fundraising page, she posted: "My daughter has given birth at 24 weeks gestation in America days before she was due to fly back home to England.

"This has incurred $100,000 in medical bills and I am worried sick about her. My grandson is doing well but we so need help with their medical bills."

So far, more than £1,560 ($2,000) has been raised. You can donate here.
