Following some provisional ideas of what going to the gym could look like in the not-too-distant future, swimmers have now been given guidance on what pools will be like when they are given the green light to reopen.

For those keen to literally dip their toes in the water again, the new guidelines will help to ensure your safety and lower the risk of spreading coronavirus.

Swim England has said that swimmers should arrive wearing their costumes under their normal clothes, and once in the water they should avoid the butterfly stroke.

Storyblocks

The organisation has launched its Returning to Pool Guidance, based on 'the latest scientific advice and government guidelines'.

The advice for pool users states that swimmers should: "Arrive ready to swim. Once you have finished your swim, leave the venue as soon as you can."

It continues: "Shower at home, pre and post swimming (showers may be available at the facility but by arriving wearing your swimwear under your clothing and showering at home pre and post swimming you will help minimise time spent in the changing rooms and help maintain the water quality)."

The guidance also recommends: "Wide strokes such as butterfly should be avoided when the lanes become busy."

Swimmers are advised not to overtake when swimming and to be 'mindful' of others if you need to take a break from swimming.

Swim England says the chances of Covid-19 being passed through pool water are low as the structure of the virus is 'likely to be more sensitive to chlorination' than other forms of the virus.

Jane Nickerson, Swim England Chief Executive, said: "We have all been missing the water during the Covid-19 enforced closure of swimming pools.

"Swim England is therefore delighted to be able to produce this guidance to help ensure the safe return to the water once swimming pools are allowed to open again.

"Our first priority remains the safety of everyone involved in our sports, be they participants, leisure centre staff, coaches or volunteers.

"When pools reopen, it will not be a case of 'business as usual' and we know that things will have to be different.

"However, if we are to play our part in protecting the NHS from another wave of Covid-19 admissions, it is important we follow the latest guidance and adjust to the new 'normal'."

As yet, the government has not announced when pools will be able to open - but you can read all the guidance here.
