A care worker died as she attempted to make her way to work during freezing cold weather in Glasgow.

Elaine Gunn McNeill, 42, was found dead in the snow after her boss raised the alarm when she failed to arrive for her shift at Cordia Services.

Her concerned manager tracked her mobile phone when he couldn't get in touch with her. Tragically, Elaine could not be saved, the Daily Record reports.

On social media friends have posted tributes to the 'bubbly' mum-of-two. One friend wrote: "Just heard the awful news that we have lost another beautiful person.

"Elaine Gunn McNeill, you will forever be remembered in our hearts for the bubbly outgoing person that you were.

"My heart goes out to Elaine's family and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Sleep tight."

A Cordia spokesperson told the paper: "We are shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Cordia employee Elaine McNeill in the Milton area of Glasgow.

"Elaine worked with Cordia for 15 years as a popular and valued member of our home care team.

"We don't have any further details about the circumstances of the incident but will be working with the authorities.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this time."

Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The 'Beast from the East' blizzard which has battered the UK this week has so far claimed 10 lives, including a seven-year-old girl who died after a car lost control and careened into a house.

In Lincolnshire a homeless man, Ben, was found dead in a tent following the freezing conditions. A local resident told the Mirror: "Ben was quite comfortable where he was and didn't want to go to Worksop. He wanted nothing to do with drugs. All he needed was a break. This is so sad."

Elsewhere the storm has caused travel chaos, with collisions reported up and down the UK. One small section of the A19 saw 20 crashes in the space of an hour. In Durham there was an 11-vehicle collision causing a road to be closed.

Armed forces have been called in to rescue drivers who were stranded on a road in the south west of England. Hampshire police said: "The incident on the #A31 was declared a major incident at 8.30pm.

"Police have now taken the lead for this incident and we have called on the military and other partners to assist us in helping you."
